Alloa, par. and seaport and chief town of Clackmannansh., on N. bank of river Forth, 6½ m. E. of Stirling by rail, 5502 ac., pop. 11,638; town, pop. 8822; 5 Banks, 3 newspapers. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. Has a good harb., wet and dry dock; there are breweries and distilleries, and the mfr. of glass, woollens, machinery, and pottery, is carried on; while in the vicinity are extensive coal-pits. (For shipping statistics, see Appendix.) Adjacent to the town are Alloa House (seat of Earl of Mar and Kerrie) and the remains of ancient mansion of Earls of Mar.
