Broadstairs in historic gazetteers

Gazetteer of the British Isles (Edinburgh: Bartholomew, 1887). John Bartholomew

Broadstairs, town and ry. sta., St Peter par., E. Kent, 1¾ m. NE. of Ramsgate and 74 m. SE. of London, pop. 4322; P.O., T.O.; 1 newspaper. It is a much-frequented bathing-place, with good firm sands, guarded by precipitous chalk cliffs, and with an unrivalled sea view. The name of the place is derived from the breadth of the sea "stair," which was defended by a gate or archway (York Gate), built in the reign of Henry VIII. In the vicinity is Piermont, a villa which was the frequent residence of Queen Victoria when a child.
