Crediton, market town and par. with ry. sta., N. Devon, on r. Greedy, near its junction with the Exe, 8m. NW. of Exeter -- par., 12,309 ac., pop. 5747; town, pop. 4165; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Saturday. C. is an ancient town; it was the seat of a bishopric from 909 to 1049, and hi the reign of Edward I. it returned 2 members to Parliament. It has, however, assumed a modern appearance, the old houses having been destroyed by the fires of 1743 and 1769. Its chief industries now are shoemaking and agriculture.
