Crewe.-- mun. bor., Coppenhall par., W. Cheshire, 22 miles SE. of Chester and 158 miles NW. of London by rail, 1336 ac., pop. 24,385; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 2 newspapers. In 1840 C. consisted of only a few houses. It owes its prosperity entirely to the fact of its having become one of the most important railway centres in the world. The London and North-Western Ry. Co. has its works here -- an enormous establishment for the mfr. of engines, carriages, and all descriptions of railway plant. Crewe was incorporated in 1877. About 1½ mile SE. is Crewe Hall.
