Dunwich. par. and vil. with coastguard station, E. Suffolk, 4 miles SW. of Southwold, 1465 ac. (335 water), pop. 250; P.O.; is an ancient corporate bor., and was at one time a place of great importance. It was the capital of the East Angles; until 1832 it returned 2 members to Parliament. In the 11th century the encroachments of the sea swept away its royal and episcopal palaces, and in the 14th century choked up its capacious harbour. Dunwich has some attractions as a seaside resort. In vicinity is Dunwich House.
