Hounslow, town and ry. sta. (Hounslow and Whitton), Heston and Isleworth pars., Middlesex, 2½ miles SW. of Brentford and 9 miles SW. of Hyde Park Corner, London, pop. 10,459; P.O., T.O., and P.O., T.O. at Hounslow Heath, 1 Bank, 1 newspaper; has extensive military barracks for both cavalry and infantry. The mfr. of gunpowder is largely carried on, as is also carriagc-building and brickmaking. The local gardens send considerable supplies to the London market. The heath, which is notorious in the annals of highway robbery, stretches 5 m. westwards, and is partly enclosed.
