Knaresborough, market town, par., and township, E. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, on summit of a hill on river Nidd, 17 miles NW. of York, 18 miles N. of Leeds, and 208 miles from London by rail--par. (containing the greater part of Harrogate), 12,490 ac., pop. 16,088; township, 3013 ac., pop. 5065; town (Knaresborough and Tentergate), 481 ac., pop. 5000; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks. Market-day, Wednesday. Linen mfr. forms the chief trade of Knaresborough; amongst its products are sheetings, towellings, diapers, &c. There is also a great trade in corn. The town was anciently surrounded bya deep moat or a dyke. Knaresborough returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885.
