Loftus (or Lofthouse), small town and par. with ry. sta., North-Riding Yorkshire, 9 miles SE. of Saltburn - par., 3737 ac., pop. 4318; town (partly also in Easington and Skelton near Red car pars.), pop. 6699; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper; is a thriving place, and has mfrs. of cordage and twine, also large vegetable gardens, the produce of which is sent to the neighbouring markets; stone is quarried; Loftus is a local government district; in vicinity is the seat of L. Hall.
