Mossley.-- manufacturing town with ry. sta., Ashton under Lyne par., Lancashire, Mottram in Longen Dale par., Cheshire, and Rochdale par., West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Tame, 2½ miles N. of Stalybridge and 10½ NE. of Manchester by rail, 2560 ac., pop. 13,372; P.O., T.O., and P.O. at Upper Mossley; 3Banks. Mossley has risen to importance within the last 50 years, since the introduction of the cotton mfr. It was placed under the Local Government Act in 1864.
