Mountsorrel in historic gazetteers

Gazetteer of the British Isles (Edinburgh: Bartholomew, 1887). John Bartholomew

Mountsorrel, town, Leicestershire, on river Soar, 4 m. SE. of Loughborough, 680 ac., pop. 2317; P.O., T.O.; comprises Mountsorrel North End, township, Barrow upon Soar par., pop. 1272; and Mountsorrel South End, township, Rothley par., pop. 1045. Mountsorrel derives importance and prosperity from the granite quarries of the surrounding district; the quality of the stone is hard and durable, and since the opening of the Mountsorrel Granite Works it has been very extensively worked. Castle Hill, which overlooks the town, was at one time surmounted by a powerful fortress, which was finally demolished by Henry III. Mountsorrel was originally called Mount Soar Hill, from its situation on the banks of the Soar.
