Ottery St Mary, market town, par., and hundred, Devon, on river Otter, 12 miles NE. of Exeter and 161 from London by rail - par. and hundred, 9942 ac., pop. 3973; town, pop. 2924; P.O., T.O., I Bank. Market-day, Thursday. During the Civil War the town was alternately occupied by both parties. The principal industries consist of mfrs. of silk shoe ribbons and handker-chiefs. Honiton lace is made in the cottages of the people. Ottery was the birthplace of Coleridge (1772-1834), the poet. The entire par. is a local government district.
