Porchester (or Portchester), par. and vil. with ry. sta., Hants, on Portsmouth harbour, 4 miles NW. of Portsmouth, 1379 ac. land, 329 tidal water and 1430 fore-shore, pop. 772; P.O., T.O.; is the Caer Peris of the ancient Britons, the Portus Magnus of the Romans, and the Portceastre of the Saxons; near the sta. is Porchester Castle, a ruined ancient stronghold, having in its interior a well preserved Saxon church. Porchester gives the title of baron to Earl of Carnarvon.
