Salcombe, town, Malborough par., Devon, on W. side of Salcombe Haven, 4 miles S. of Kingsbridge, pop. 1826; P.O., T.O., 1 newspaper. Salcombe is a small town, built on the steep side of a hill; the climate here is said to be the warmest on the SW. coast of England; shipbuilding, brewing, and fishing are carried on. Salcombe Haven is a sea-inlet, penetrating to Kingsbridge, and affording safe anchorage to vessels of 200 tons. Near the town stands Salcombe Castle, a ruined fortress, taken and dismantled by the Parliamentarians during the great Civil War.
