Sandal Magna, small town, par., and township with ry. sta. (Sandal), S. div. West-Riding Yorkshire - par., 7694 ac., pop. 7787; town and township, 2 miles SE. of Wakefield, 1617 ac., pop. 4264; P.O.; in vicinity are the remains of Sandal Castle, once the residence of John Baliol, but chiefly famous as the scene of the battle of Wakefield (1460), in which the Duke of York was defeated by Queen Margaret. It was dismantled during the great struggle between King Charles I. and the Parliament. The Belle Vue section of the par. (pop. 3712) was added to the parl. limits of Wakefield in 1885.
