Sedbergh, market town, par., and township with ry. sta., N. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Rawthey, 14½ miles NW. of Ingleton - par., 52,663 ac., pop. 4079; township, 19,603 ac., pop. 2268; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Wednesday. The town occupies a secluded position, being entirely surrounded by hills. The grammar school was founded in the reign of Edward VI., and is richly endowed. The principal industries are the mfrs. of cotton and wool. In addition to the weekly market there are several cattle fairs.
