Stanhope, market town and par. with ry. sta., Durham - par., 61,195 ac. (320 water), pop. 8793; town, on river Wear, 6 miles NW. of Wolsingham, pop. 1840; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Friday. Stanhope is celebrated for its lead mines, which are very extensive; ironstone and limestone are also worked. Stanhope Castle was a seat of the Featherstonehaugh family; the park is 12 miles in circuit.
