Stone.-- market town and par. with ry. sta., Staffordshire, on river Trent, 7 miles S. of Stoke upon Trent - par. (partly within the parl. limits of Stoke upon Trent), 20,446 ac., pop. 13,155; town, pop. 5669; P.O., T.O.,2 Banks. Market-day, Tuesday. Stone dates from very ancient times, and had a religious establishment of the 7th century. It has earthenware mfrs., shoe-making, brewing, and transit traffic; and a town hall, a market hall, and a free school founded in 1558. Admiral Sir John Jervis (1734-1823), Earl St Vincent, was a native. Stone Park is the seat of Earl Granville.
