Sturminster Newton, market town and par. with ry. sta., Dorset, in N. of co., on river Stour, 9 miles NW. of Blandford, 4229 ac., pop. 1859; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Thursday. Sturminster Newton stands on a gentle slope which declines to the Stour, and is a market town of great antiquity. The mfr. of white baize is the principal industry. In the neighbourhood is a mound, encircled with a fosse, marking the site of the ancient castle.
