Tadcaster, market town and par. with ry. sta., E. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Wharfe, 14 miles SE. of Harrogate and 9 miles SW. of York, 4080 ac., pop. 2965; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Wednesday. The par. contains the townships of East Tadcaster and West Tadcaster - East Tadcaster, 580 ac., pop. 869; West Tadcaster, 1497 ac., pop. 1660. Tadcaster occupies the site of the Roman Calcaria, and has yielded many Roman coins; it had anciently a castle, out of the ruins of which the handsome bridge over the Wharfe was built; it figures in history in connection with the battle of Towton (1461), and with several affairs which occurred during the Civil War. The trade is unimportant.
