Towcester.-- market town and par. with ry. sta., Northamptonshire, on river Tove, 8½ miles SW. of Northampton, 2790 ac., pop. 2834; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Tuesday. Towcester occupies the site of a Roman station, and was an important place in Saxon times. Of its walls, raised in the reign of Edward the Elder, some faint traces remain. Shoe-making and the mfr. of pillow-lace are carried on.
