Twickenham in historic gazetteers

Gazetteer of the British Isles (Edinburgh: Bartholomew, 1887). John Bartholomew

Twickenham, town and par., Middlesex, on river Thames, 11¼ miles SW. of London by rail, 2415 ac., pop. 12,479; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Twickenham is practically a suburb of Richmond, with which it is connected by Richmond Bridge. It was noted, in the 18th century, as a place of fashionable resort, and is associated with the names of many distinguished men, amongst whom are Pope, who resided here, and to whom there is a monument in St Mary's church, and Horace Walpole, who built Strawberry Hill. Mansions, villas, and ornate cottages are very numerous, and much of the land is disposed in market gardens. Like Richmond, Twickenham is a resort of Londoners.
