Welshpool.-- parl. and mun. bor., and market town with ry. sta., in E. of Montgomeryshire, on river Severn, 9 miles NW. of Montgomery and 19¾ SW. of Shrewsbury by rail - par., 6801 ac., pop. 4988; parl. bor. (extending into Guilsfield par.), 6761 ac., pop. 5211; mun. bor. (comprising a further portion of Guilsfield par., and portions of Berriew, Battington, and Castle Caereinion parishes), 19,549 ac., pop. 7107; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Monday. Welshpool, ordinarily called Pool, derives its name from its vicinity to a small lake in Powis Park. It is regarded as the county town, and is a seat of assizes, sessions, and county courts. It has malting and tanning, and was formerly the chief seat of the Welsh flannel mfr., but that trade is now centred at Newtown. Welshpool was incorporated by James I.; it is one of the Montgomery District of Parliamentary Boroughs, which returns 1 member.
