Wiveliscombe, market town and par. with ry. sta., Somerset - par., 5984 ac., pop. 2612; town, 9½ miles NW. of Taunton by rail, 182 ac., pop. 1624; P.O., T.O. Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. Wiveliscombe (popularly Wilscombe) is an ancient place, with several very old houses and remains of an episcopal palace. The town is situated on a low hill, and is a local government district. Brewing is the chief industry. There are slate quarries in the neighbourhood. In addition to the weekly markets great markets are held on the last Tuesday of February and July, and several fairs annually.
