Watford.-- market town and par., Herts, in SW. of co., on river Colne, 9 miles SW. of St Albans and 18 miles NW. of London by rail - par., 10,780 ac., pop. 15,507; town (comprising parts of Bushey and Watford pars.), 530 ac., pop. 10,073; P.O., T.O., 2 banks, 2 newspapers. Market-day, Tuesday. Watford has an ancient parish church, free library, and school of science and art. In the town and neighbourhood are a silk factory, straw-plait factory, wood-turning works, breweries, papermills, and some other industrial establishments. The London Orphan Asylum is situated at Watford.
